Steps to Enroll at the Indiana School for the Deaf

Educational placement at the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) is a Case Conference Committee (CCC) decision. The first step is for a parent/legal guardian to contact the student’s neighborhood school or Local Education Agency (LEA) to express their interest in ISD enrollment.

Minimal criteria requirements for potential ISD enrollment:

  • A resident of Indiana

  • Registered with your local school district

  • Eligible for special education services under the criteria for Deaf/Hard of Hearing

  • Between the ages of 3 and 22 years

  • Has adequate evaluation/assessment information

  • Has completed an ISD Educational Tour of the facility and campus

STEP TWO

After a review of the educational records by ISD, a CCC meeting will be scheduled by the LEA. The parent/legal guardian must ask the LEA to invite ISD to participate in the meeting to discuss the student’s current educational programming and progress and to determine if ISD may be an appropriate educational placement to support the student’s overall language, communication and educational goals and objectives.

If the CCC determines that ISD is the appropriate educational placement, the family will also complete additional ISD registration paperwork prior to the student’s first day at ISD.

We at the Indiana School for the Deaf would like to offer opportunities to visit our school and learn about Deaf Education.

We have scheduled 2 educational visits for the 2022-2023 school year: Tuesday November 15, 2022 & Thursday March 2nd. Walk-ins are not available; you must sign up in advance. There are a limited number available for each date, so please plan ahead. To sign-up, email Melissa Hopper at mhopper@isd.k12.in.us or call 317-550-4853.

These visits are for the general public and different than educational visits for prospective students. If you are interested in enrolling your student, contact Shannon Crawford scrawford@isd.k12.in.us.
