Speedway
Airport
Speedway,
Indiana
Summer
in the Skies students took a field trip to see the Speedway Airport, a
small uncontrolled
airport on the westside of Indianapolis. It has small asphalt runways,
6 & 24, with a width of 36 feet and a
length of 2, 820 feet. The grass landing strip, 9 & 27, is 126 feet
wide and 2, 185 feet long. The FAA plans to
close this airport within the next couple of years.

school van. Thousands of VOR's
across the country are valuable navigation tools for pilots. After seeing
this VOR, students quickly spotted
other VOR's during their flights, such as the VOR located near Reagan National
Airport in Washington DC.
Right

Airport and can be
seen from above. It is used by pilots as a visual indication of wind
direction.

near Indianapolis can

the Speedway Airport.
