Speedway Airport
Speedway, Indiana

Summer in the Skies students took a field trip to see the Speedway Airport, a small uncontrolled
airport on the westside of Indianapolis.  It has small asphalt runways, 6 & 24, with a width of 36 feet and a
length of 2, 820 feet. The grass landing strip, 9 & 27, is 126 feet wide and 2, 185 feet long.  The FAA plans to
close this airport within the next couple of years.

Left photo:  Students got an up-close look at the Brickyard VOR from the school van.  Thousands of VOR's
across the country are valuable navigation tools for pilots.  After seeing this VOR, students quickly spotted
other VOR's during their flights, such as the VOR located near Reagan National Airport in Washington DC.

Right photo:  This "wind tee" is located near the runway at the Speedway Airport and can be
seen from above.  It is used by pilots as a visual indication of wind direction.

be seen at the Speedway Airport.
Right photo: The orange windsock can be seen behind the main building at the Speedway Airport.
