- If
you were not able to find PFD fabric, then use these directions
to prepare the fabric for dyeing.
- Cut
the muslin/cotton into 7" squares.
- Collect
the leaves you want to put on the quilt blocks. Don't use
leaves that have already fallen to the ground. Use leaves
picked fresh from the tree.
- Put
the leaves into a beaker of water to soak for 30 minutes.
- Use
paper towels to pat the leaves dry.
- You
will need to use a hard surface, such as a lab table or a
hard tile floor to do the leaf pounding.
- Make
a layer beginning with a sheet of white paper. Put a muslin/cotton
square on top of the white paper, then put a leaf, face-down
in the center of the block. Make sure the leaf is positioned
so that there is at least 1/2" of fabric around the edges
for the sewing seam.
- Cover
the leaf with plastic Saran wrap.
- Use
the hammer to tap every part of the leaf into the muslin/cotton.
As you tap the leaf, you will see a color change so you can
see where you have tapped.
- When
every part of the leaf has been tapped, remove the Saran wrap
and the leaf. After all of the tapping, the leaf may be in
pieces!
- If
you have done this correctly, you will see a print of the
leaf with clear details of the veins.
- Allow
the block of muslin to dry.
- Use
a fine tipped black fabric marker to outline the leaf.
- Iron
the block to set the colors.
- The
leaf block is now ready to be sewed into the wall hanging.
