Quilting Projects
High School Earth Science and Chemistry
Indiana School for the Deaf
You might be tempted to ask, "What
do Earth Science and Chemistry
have to do with making quilts?"
Making a quilt is quite a "science" in itself! When you
add in the
mathematics and geometry of measuring, the art involved in designing
and creating the blocks, as well as the science concepts involved
in the
themes of quilts, you truly have an integrated project that teaches
skills
across the curriculum.
Our adventure in quilting began with the Earth Science students
participating in an exchange of quilt squares with schools in the
USA and
in Australia as part of the Jason Project. When the Chemistry students
saw what the Earth Science students were doing, they wanted to
make a quilt, too!
