Quilting Projects
Chemistry
Indiana School for the Deaf

As part of the "Celebrate the Subjects" program in the High School Department,
during the 2001-2002 school year, March was the month to "celebrate" art in all
of the classes. With the Chemistry students already seeing what the Earth Science
students were doing, they began complaining that they "never got to do anything
fun like that!" Students were given the assignment of making quilt squares that
represented concepts and vocabulary they had learned in chemistry class. They
were given 7" squares of white muslin, permanent fabric paints, and brushes. They
searched for chemistry photos and clipart that could be traced on to the white
muslin squares and then painted with the fabric paints. Each student's name was
printed on the completed quilt squares with permanent fabric markers. The quilt
squares were then pieced together into a quilt top. The quilt is now in the final
stages of completion, with the quilt being machine quilted.
