| The spring of 1999 marked the beginning of a new program for ISD students called Discover Scuba, which is sponsored by members of the Downtown Indianapolis Sertoma Club. The Discover Scuba program is led by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Master Instructor and Sertoma member, Mr. Bill Kiesel. He is assisted with a team of instructors and divemasters who give students from ISD and Indian Creek High School an introduction to the fun of scuba diving. Each year in March, the Discover Scuba program is held on a Saturday afternoon. The following people were involved in making this a fun experience for the students:
The
Discover Scuba program
is a 3-hour experience which begins with introductions, a discussion
of the history of scuba diving, and a brief videotape. Students
get into the pool and are then assisted with putting on the scuba gear.
Students learn basic signs that are used in scuba diving and are taught
how to breathe from the regulators, clear water from their masks, equalize
pressure in their ears and sinuses, and use alternate air sources.
At the end of the lesson, students get a chance to swim around the pool
using the full scuba gear. It is always a fun afternoon that ends
much too soon! |
