Day 4, Saturday, June 16, 2007

Ben (ICHS):

Today was a lot of fun. We had a pretty easy morning, as we didn't have to be anywhere super early. Most of us slept in, but a select few got up nice and early (8:00, hey it's all relative) to go to the beach. We left and had lunch at the Lone Cabbage, where some of us tried gator meat. We agreed that it tasted like chewy chicken. From the Lone Cabbage, we drove five to ten minutes to a place where we went on an airboat ride. We learned a lot about alligators, including their age (65-70 years), and how to guess their size. We also learned that alligator gender is determined by their egg temperatures, and that there are five times as many females as males. As adults, male alligators have ten to fifteen females. We saw many different sizes of alligators from babies to one that was almost eleven feet long! Afterwards, we went back to the hotel for a couple hours, where most of us napped, then went the the Lobster Shanty for dinner (great seafood). We're having a great time down here and we'll keep you posted.

Corey (ISD):

I was excited when I woke up today because we went to the beach. While we were at the beach, we watched two of the rocket gantries at Patrick Air Force Base being demolished. We saw the explosion and then the gantries collapsed. We played in the waves, walked along the beach, and looked for shells. We saw a homeless man who had slept on the beach all night. We wondered what had happened to him and why he was homeless.

We walked back to the hotel and got ready to go out for lunch. We went to a restaurant called Lone Cabbage Fish Camp. It is close to the river. I ordered a combo meal with frog legs, catfish, and fried gator. I liked the frog legs and gator the best. The gator tasted like chicken and the frog legs tasted like fish.

We went to Midway Airboat Center in Christmas, Florida. Before the airboat ride, I got to hold a baby alligator. The baby alligator's belly was smooth and soft, but its back was rough and hard. We went on an airboat ride on the St. Johns River. I thought it was amazing when we saw a Seminole Indian burial mound. We saw many alligators, birds, cows, and a couple of horses. I also got to hold a large python named Baby. I was surprised to find out that it eats one rabbit every 3 weeks. After the airboat ride, we convinced James to take us to Ron Jon's Surf Shop. We came back to the hotel and changed into nice clothes. We went to a nice restaurant called "The Lobster Shanty." I tried something new and ordered rock shrimp. It was too much food for me and I couldn't eat it all. I really liked the rock shrimp. I had cheese cake for dessert, too.
My favorite part of the whole day was holding the baby alligator!

Eating lunch on the patio at Lone Cabbage Fish Camp                             "Queen" Carrie ate too much!

We ate fried alligator then held a baby alligator !

We held a baby alligator then rode an airboat to see them in the wild.

We had a short safety briefing from the captain of Midway Airboats.

It was strange to see cattle along the St. Johns River.

We loved the airboat ride and afterwards, some of held a large python.

Tyler says, "Hey Dad, look what I am holding!"                               Sarah isn't sure if she likes holding the python.

Cool Dudes

Aren't we beautiful and handsome?????

A gorgeous sunset for our last night in Cocoa Beach
