The philosophy of the ISD Athletic Department is to provide equal opportunity to student-athletes in sports program. Education is the top priority and athletics is considered a prestigious "privilege." Student-athletes will learn and develop mental, physical, emotional and social skills in the ISD athletic program to use in their daily life.

The ISD Athletic Department provides athletic programs to serve middle school and high school student-athletes after school hours. ISD is an affiliated member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and Central States Schools for the Deaf (CSSD) for high school and Indianapolis Independent School League (IISL) for middle school.

ISD hosts annual special athletic events such as high school homecoming volleyball & football, girls' & boys' basketball, and high school and middle school athletic banquets. The annual CSSD high school volleyball, basketball and track are annually hosted by different school members. Different school members host the IISL middle school volleyball, girls' & boys' basketball and track tournaments annually.

Athletic practices normally are held between 3:45 and 6:00 p.m. Day student-athletes' transportation can be arranged with the Indianapolis Public School Bus Department daily at 6:15 p.m. after practices. On contest days, parents are responsible to pick up day student-athletes or they can stay in residence hall overnight with pre-approval from the Assistant Deans.

ISD has twelve high school athletic programs and twelve middle school athletic programs. High School sports include football, volleyball, boys' & girls' cross-country, boys' and girls' basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, boys' & girls' swimming, boys' and girls' track, baseball and softball. Middle School sports include football, volleyball, boys' and girls' basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, boys' and girls' swimming, boys' and girls' track, baseball and softball.

The ISD Athletic Department staff consists of an Athletic Director, Athletic Secretary, Athletic Trainer, Equipment Manager, Concession Coordinator, and 60 coaches.
